Nineteen days after acquiring Mike Remlinger in a trade with the Cubs, the Red Sox set the veteran left-hander free prior to Sunday's game against the Tigers. Things were ill-fated from the start for Remlinger in a Boston uniform, as he didn't retire a batter in his Aug. 9 debut, throwing 27 pitches in the process. Remlinger pitched two-thirds of an inning Saturday night and allowed two hits and two inherited runners to score. He posted a 14.85 ERA in eight outings for the Red Sox, the team he grew up rooting for during his youth in Plymouth, Mass. The Red Sox designated Remlinger for assignment with the purpose of giving him his unconditional release, a move that will allow him to perhaps latch on with another contender before Sept. 1.
