Moises Alou was activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing the Giants' last 15 games with a right hamstring strain.
The team's lone All-Star representative this season, Alou was signed in the offseason to protect Barry Bonds, who has missed the entire campaign due to knee problems.
In 87 games this season, Alou has hit a team-leading .328 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI. He is second on the Giants in homers and third in both RBI and runs scored (51).
To make room for Alou, San Francisco optioned rookie outfielder Jason Ellison to Class AAA Fresno.
