The Devil Rays don't plan to add many reinforcements when rosters expand in September, but at least one of the newcomers figures to play a prominent role.
As part of an ongoing effort to keep their young starters' pitch counts from running too high, the Rays are pondering going to a six-man rotation for the season's final month. The participants and details are yet to be hammered out, but Manager Joe Maddon and executive vice president Andrew Friedman discussed the possibilities during their drive to and from Port Charlotte for Monday morning's groundbreaking ceremony at the Rays' future spring training facility.
"We came up with some ideas and now we want to float them by the coaching staff," said Maddon. "We talked about a whole bunch of stuff."
