Ryan Freel was surprisingly upbeat for a guy about to undergo knee surgery.
"What can you do?" he said. "You can't mope and pout. You've got to deal with it."
Freel injured his right knee and re-injured his right quadriceps in the Reds' 7-3 loss Monday night to the San Francisco Giants.
He hurt his knee jumping to try to catch a line drive.
"I came down on it sideways," he said. "I didn't think it was anything. But I woke up (Tuesday) morning and couldn't walk."
An MRI revealed torn cartilage. He'll have arthroscopic surgery Thursday.
He's expected to miss two to three weeks. The strained quad probably will keep him out longer than the knee.
"The knee is similar to what Kenny Kelly had," said team medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek, who will do the surgery. "(Kelly) was back in 10 days."
