The Yankees are one of four finalists to acquire Rangers reliever Eric Gagne before Wednesday's 4 p.m. non-waivers trade deadline, major league sources said Monday night. They are trying desperately to upgrade their bullpen, and the Devil Rays' Dan Wheeler and Al Reyes could be fallback options if the Yankees can't land Gagne.
The Rangers turned their attention to sifting through offers for Gagne after agreeing in principle to a deal that would send first baseman Mark Teixeira and lefty Ron Mahay to the Braves for catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and three minor- leaguers. Sources indicated that the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Brewers were in the mix for Gagne as of Monday night and that there was no favorite among those four. If the Rangers don't like the offers they get, they have no problem holding on to Gagne.
