A day after hitting Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley with a pitch -- a fastball that broke a bone in Utley's right hand -- Washington Nationals rookie John Lannan said he felt badly about the sequence in which he hit Utley and then Ryan Howard, resulting in his ejection from his first major league game.
"What happened was a shame," Lannan said. "I was just trying to make a good pitch. I'm sorry to see that he got hurt. He's a great hitter, a great part of baseball. I'm just trying to go out there and trying to look toward my next start and move toward performing better."
