Gary Sheffield was accused in an HBO interview of using an anabolic steroid, "the clear," by Bay Area chemist Patrick Arnold, who is credited with inventing the substance.
Arnold works for the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative that has been at the center of a steroid controversy that has centered on baseball and, notably, on Giants star Barry Bonds, who was also accused by Arnold during the interview of using performance-enhancing drugs.
"I have never seen him, I don't even know his name," Sheffield said, alluding to Arnold a few hours before the Tigers met the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
"He's a stranger to me.
"I have never seen this person in my life. I don't know him. He don't know me -- period."
