The timing of Brian Sabean's contract extension, made official Friday, is an invitation to speculation and, undoubtedly, howls of derision. You wouldn't believe how many teams would jump at the chance to hire Sabean, starting right at the top with the beleaguered New York Yankees, and it's remarkable how people forget how he gave Giants fans a solid, entertaining contender until ownership went blind to the signs of Barry Bonds' regression -- both physically and professionally -- in September of 2005. Unless Sabean really has lost his mind, and has joined ownership in its desire to see Bonds play left field until he's 50, this means the end of Bonds' tenure as a Giant.
