Left-hander Kirk Rueter was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Giants with gout in his right big toe.
The move was retroactive to July 30. San Francisco also purchased the contract of right-hander Brian Cooper from Triple-A Fresno.
Rueter, who lost his longtime spot in the Giants' rotation last month, has barely pitched as a reliever in the last four weeks. San Francisco hoped he could make Sunday's start in place of Brett Tomko, who has a bruised foot.
Instead, the Giants recalled Cooper, a journeyman who pitched briefly for San Francisco last year. He made his season debut Sunday, starting against Roger Clemens and the Houston Astros.
