Although he's making progress, Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett will not make his scheduled start on Friday due to an avulsion on his right middle finger. Terry Francona told reporters on Wednesday afternoon that Beckett will instead throw a side session. Beckett, the first seven-game winner in the majors this year, left Sunday's game after four innings with torn skin on his finger. He has a history of blister problems, but the team said this is not the same issue. Francona indicated that Boston will call up a starter from Triple-A Pawtucket for Friday's game, but he would not say who that will be. It won't be Jon Lester, but the left-hander who is recovering from cancer, is getting back on track. His comeback has been derailed by forearm cramping, he but will pitch Saturday in Ottawa for the PawSox. "He thinks he's ready to throw 100 [pitches], which is a great sign, but we'll take it slow," Francona said, according to the Boston Globe. While the Red Sox were waiting around to see if the weather would clear for Wednesday night's game at Fenway Park, Francona said that J.D. Drew would get the night off after he injured his back running into the wall on Tuesday night.
