Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz will undergo surgery Wednesday to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, the team announced Monday. A source told ESPN the 32-year-old reliever faces a roughly three-month recovery, placing his return during the second half of the season.
The Dodgers placed Diaz on the 15-day injured list ahead of their series finale against the Colorado Rockies. In a corresponding roster move, left-hander Jake Eder was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Diaz's Sunday outing against the Colorado Rockies triggered immediate concern. He surrendered three runs without recording an out, prompting post-game conversations with the training staff.
"Obviously, we all saw the stuff last night, and it set up red flags," manager Dave Roberts said. "After the game, he had a conversation with our training staff, and felt that he had some elbow discomfort. ... We just wanted to be proactive, and felt that it was smart to get him an MRI."
Roberts confirmed that imaging revealed no ligament damage, with the issue confined to the loose bodies. The procedure is scheduled at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles. Roberts also noted a personal connection to Diaz's situation.
"It was the first time he felt it," Roberts said. "Not to make it about by myself, but I had that same surgery at the end of my career. ... So, I can actually relate to what he's going through. ... It's unfortunate."
Diaz signed a three-year, $69 million contract with Los Angeles this offseason after seven seasons with the New York Mets, where he recorded 144 saves. In his brief stint as a Dodger, he posted four saves and a 10.50 ERA across his appearances this season.
With Diaz sidelined, Roberts indicated the team will deploy a ninth-inning committee rather than designating a single replacement closer. Eder, 27, was designated for assignment earlier this month by the Washington Nationals after posting a 4.91 ERA in 18⅓ relief innings for the Los Angeles Angels last season.
