The New York Yankees could receive three significant reinforcements in the coming weeks, with starters Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon each nearing rehab assignments and shortstop Anthony Volpe seeking medical clearance to begin a minor league rehabilitation stint.

Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that both pitchers could begin rehab outings within the next week after each threw live batting practice in the past two days. Cole tossed 42 pitches Sunday while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Rodon threw 50 pitches Monday following an October procedure to remove bone chips from his elbow.

"I have no complaints," Cole said. "Stamina was good. Pitches are fine — they're good. I'm being a little nitpicky, but everything's good."

Both pitchers will throw again on four days rest. The organization has not yet determined whether the next step will be a game appearance or another live session. New York has targeted late April or early May for Rodon's return, with Cole expected back approximately a month later.

"I just want to make sure we do what's right," Cole said. "We're just taking in a little bit more information over the next couple of days before we make that call."

Cole, 35, missed all of 2025 after undergoing elbow reconstruction last March. The six-time All-Star and 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner last pitched competitively in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series. Rodon, 33, posted a 3.09 ERA across 195 innings in 2025 before the elbow required cleanup surgery in October.

Volpe visited Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Monday seeking clearance to begin a rehab assignment after October surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. If cleared, Boone said the plan calls for Volpe to play four games at shortstop for Double-A Somerset this week.

The 24-year-old accumulated more than 50 live at-bats in Tampa during camp. Volpe played through the shoulder injury for most of last season, finishing with a .212 batting average, 83 wRC+, and 1.0 fWAR across 153 games, a sharp drop from his 3.5 fWAR in 2024.

Jose Caballero has filled in at shortstop and entered Monday with the sixth-lowest wRC+ among qualified hitters. General manager Brian Cashman confirmed over the weekend that Volpe will reclaim the starting role upon his return.
