Chase DeLauter became the first player in Cleveland Guardians history to open his career with a multi-homer game Thursday, slugging two home runs in a memorable regular-season debut at T-Mobile Park.
DeLauter connected on a slider into the right field stands in his first at-bat, joining Earl Averill, Jay Bell, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Jhonkensy Noel as the only Guardians to homer in their first major-league plate appearance. He added a 422-foot shot to right-center in the ninth inning. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is just the seventh player in major-league history to accomplish the feat.
"He's not from this planet," said reliever Erik Sabrowski, who earlier in the week referred to DeLauter as "a f---ing martian."
DeLauter finished with three hits in five at-bats, also scoring from first base on a Jose Ramirez double. Batting between All-Stars Steven Kwan and Ramirez, the 24-year-old showed no signs of inexperience.
"I think the coolest part is he's not afraid of the moment," said veteran slugger Rhys Hoskins. "Maybe he doesn't know. Maybe ignorance is bliss."
Health remains the central concern surrounding DeLauter's season. He appeared in just 138 minor-league games across three full seasons due to core muscle surgery, a broken hamate bone and recurring foot issues. Cleveland plans to use him at designated hitter periodically and schedule regular rest days to manage his workload.
