Seattle Mariners teammates Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena appear headed toward a quick resolution after a nationally televised confrontation during Team USA's 5-3 World Baseball Classic victory over Mexico Monday night. Raleigh said Tuesday the two have already spoken and remain close.
"I love Randy. I do," Raleigh said. "There's no beef. When we get back to Seattle, he's my brother. We're family. I already reached out to him."
The incident occurred when Arozarena reached toward Raleigh before an at-bat and Raleigh did not reciprocate the gesture. Arozarena subsequently delivered a profanity-laced reaction in Spanish to a Mexican journalist, saying Raleigh could "f--- off" and "go to hell," while adding that Raleigh "can shove it straight up his ass."
Team USA manager Mark DeRosa said Raleigh had spoken with Arozarena before the game about not putting him in a difficult position with his American teammates during competition. Raleigh addressed the situation briefly Tuesday but declined to take questions after his statement.
It remains unclear whether Arozarena, a Cuban-born Mexican citizen since 2022, was sincerely upset or engaged in competitive gamesmanship. The pair have been Mariners teammates since Arozarena arrived via trade from Tampa Bay during the 2024 season.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson expressed confidence the relationship would remain intact.
"I know that our team loves each other deeply, and that's one of the key ingredients we have in that clubhouse," Wilson said. "I don't anticipate this being any bit of an issue."
