The San Diego Padres are narrowly below the $273 million threshold for the third level of luxury tax penalization.

The $272.2 million payroll figure, as calculated by Roster Resource, comes after the four-year, $26 million deal given to Michael Wacha. The contract carries a $6.5 million collective balance tax hit.

The payroll figures are estimates, but The Athletic has confirmed with the club that they remain below the third tax threshold.
