Michael Young very quietly has become one of baseball's most consistent hitters over the last several seasons. The Rangers apparently want to keep him around for a few more years.
The Rangers on Thursday agreed to terms on a new contract extension with Young, according to a report on MLB.com.
The American League batting champion in 2005 and a three-time All-Star shortstop, Young currently is under contract for the 2007 season, and the Rangers hold a $5 million club option for 2008.
According to the report, Texas will hold a news conference Friday to officially announce Young's new contract, which is worth $80 million over five years.
It would be the second-largest deal in franchise history, dwarfed only by Alex Rodriguez's 10-year, $252 million contract in 2000.
