According to club and league officials, Barry Bonds would be placed on the 40-man roster once Major League Baseball approves his contract. Bonds does not need to sign the contract to be on the roster, but must put pen to paper before playing in a game. Earlier this week, league officials did not approve Bonds' $15.8 million deal because of language that pertains to personal appearances. A Giants official said the clauses would have passed muster under terms of the old collective bargaining agreement, but the new deal apparently disallows such provisions. The Giants want to ensure that Bonds will participate fully in team marketing and publicity efforts. Bonds' lead agent, Jeff Borris, told the Associated Press the player was not ready to sign any documents. But because of health and risk factors, it's expected Bonds will sign and guarantee the deal before he reports to spring training and begins to do baseball work.
