The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have signed outfielder Luis Matos and infielder Nick Green to minor league contracts, with an invitation to spring training. The 28 year old Matos split the 2006 season between Baltimore and Washington, while also playing two games with Fredrick (Orioles AA). Originally selected by the Orioles in the 10th round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft, Matos made his major league debut with Baltimore in 2000. In 508 career games in the big leagues, he has combined to hit .255 (410-for-1605) with 20 home runs and 140 RBI. Green, 28, began the 2006 season with Tampa Bay. He also spent time with Triple-A Durham before being traded to New York (AL) in a deal for cash considerations on 5/25. He split the remainder of the season between Columbus (AAA) and the Yankees. Green batted .184 with two homers and four RBI in 63 combined games with Tampa and New York. Originally selected by Atlanta in the 32nd round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft, the middle infielder made his major league debut with the Braves in 2004. In 269 career major league games, he has combined to hit .243 (169-for-696) with 10 home runs and 59 RBI.
