There has been speculation in legal circles that Barry Bonds is seeking to guarantee his salary if the grand jury indicts him and Major League Baseball seeks to suspend him. But Bonds' attorney, Michael Rains, said he doubted that Bonds needs protection. ``I'm still of the opinion that if the government acts responsibly, it won't indict Barry at all,'' Rains said. ``And if they did, it would be a year before we'd go to trial. I'd make a dozen or so motions to dismiss because of government misconduct.'' Giants first baseman Mark Sweeney said he spoke with Bonds last week and the left fielder said his contract was ``a long way from getting done.''
