Joe Maddon had a one-on-one meeting with Jason Heyward before Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday.

Heyward hasn't been in the starting lineup for the Chicago Cubs since Game 5 of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I covered everything," Maddon said. "We had a good exchange of thoughts. He didn't leave angry. It was a very open conversation. He's a very good baseball player and a big part of our future. If we didn't have other options, we probably wouldn't do it [replace him]."

Maddon chose to play Chris Coghlan in right field on Tuesday night and started Jorge Soler in Game 2.

Heyward replaced Soler as a pinch runner in Game 2 and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. His postseason average is down to .067.

He signed an eight-year, $184 million deal with the Cubs last winter.

"There was nothing that needed to be said to me," Heyward said after Game 1. "He makes the lineup, and that's that. He's going to put the best team out there, whatever he feels like is going to help us win."
