The Chicago Cubs on Sunday announced that the club has agreed to a one-year deal with right-handed pitcher Kerry Wood for the 2007 season. Wood, 29, ranks fifth in club history with 1,299 career strikeouts -- just six strikeouts behind Greg Maddux (1,305) for fourth in franchise annals. In 189 career games (178 starts) since making his Major League debut in 1998, Wood has compiled a 71-56 record with a 3.68 ERA (461 ER in 1,128 2/3 IP). Wood has averaged 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, third-highest in baseball since 1998 -- Randy Johnson has averaged 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings while Pedro Martinez has averaged 10.5.
