The agent for one of the Angels' primary free agent targets, All-Star center fielder Gary Matthews Jr., has had preliminary discussions with Stoneman to gauge the interest of both parties. And it's high. Scott Leventhal said that Matthews has "not closed the door" on the Texas Rangers but added that "numerous" teams have inquired about Matthews, who hit .313 with 19 home runs, 79 RBI, 44 doubles and a .371 on-base percentage from the leadoff spot. Matthews has taken notice of the Angels. "That's something that Gary and I have discussed in detail," Leventhal said. "Absolutely it would be exciting to go play with that organization with that roster with that talent -- with Vladimir Guerrero in right and Garret Anderson in left and Gary in center field, leading off for that club. With that pitching and that bullpen and that defense, who wouldn't be excited?"
