The Detroit Tigers made Kirk Gibson their new hitting coach Friday, the same day they activated All-Star Magglio Ordonez from the disabled list. "It happened very quickly," said Gibson, who had been Alan Trammell's bench coach for the last 2? seasons. "I'm a team guy, and I've been asked to do something, so I will." Gibson switches jobs with Bruce Fields, who had been the team's hitting coach since the beginning of the 2003 season. Trammell described Gibson's reaction to the move as "lukewarm," and Gibson said he had never even considered the position. "This has never been my mind-set, and I've tried to stay away from it," he said. "But I'll do it, because Alan asked me. He's trying to maximize what he's getting out of the team."
