The Rakuten Golden Eagles plan to offer Masahiro Tanaka a contract with a record annual value of around $7.7 million, or 800 million yen, according to a report.

Tanaka said this week that he wants to pitch in the Major Leagues next season, but Rakuten isn't sold on posting him.

The $7.7 million offer would double Tanaka's current salary and make him the highest-paid player in Nippon Professional Baseball history.
