Matt Harvey has elected to undergo Tommy John surgery that likely will force him to miss the entire 2014 season.

Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery later this month.

Harvey had planned to rehab and undergo a throwing program over a six- to eight-week period in order to be able to pitch next season with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Harvey went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA in 26 starts this past season for the New York Mets.
