Padres first baseman Phil Nevin was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained muscle in his left side. The move was made retroactive to Tuesday. Outfielder Ben Johnson was recalled from Triple-A Portland to take Nevin's roster spot. Nevin hurt himself during batting practice Tuesday night and hasn't played since. He was supposed to swing a bat Sunday but didn't try. Manager Bruce Bochy thought the slugger would be ready by next Friday, but with center fielder Dave Roberts nursing a sore knee, Bochy didn't want to be down two players. Nevin thinks he'll be ready to go when he's eligible to be activated on July 7, when the Padres are at Houston. He is batting .268 with nine home runs and a team-leading 47 RBI.
