The Phillies defeated the Pirates 6-4 on Thursday, handing rookie Gerrit Cole his first Major League loss.

Cole, who allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, had won his first four career starts for Pittsburgh.

"I thought he pitched well," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's a 22-year-old young man. He's still learning, continuing to grow. He's fun to watch."
