The Red Sox released catcher Javy Lopez on Friday, with manager Terry Francona saying it was a matter of not having "enough at-bats for him."
The Red Sox acquired Lopez on Aug. 4 from the Orioles for a player to be named later to fill in for Jason Varitek, who missed August with a knee injury.
Varitek was activated on Sunday, and Lopez hasn't played since.
