The Padres added some depth on Thursday, acquiring utility player Russell Branyan from the Devil Rays for a minor league pitcher. Branyan was batting .201 with 12 homers and 27 RBI in 64 games for Tampa Bay. He is scheduled to join the team on Friday for a three-game series in Colorado. The 30-year-old lefthanded hitter has played 53 games in right field, five at third base, two at first and one in left field.
