The Chicago Cubs have had nine different starting pitchers this season. Jerome Williams will be No. 10. Williams, acquired from the San Francisco Giants in the LaTroy Hawkins trade May 28, will be added to the roster on Tuesday to start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Williams was 1-1 with a 2.59 ERA in four games at Triple-A Iowa. He's given up 27 hits over 24 1/3 innings, and struck out 17. The young Hawaiian right-hander won 10 games in 2004 with the Giants. "He's progressed," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Sunday. "I don't know if he's quite where he was last year in 'Frisco but he's close. His velocity is working its way up. He's been working hard on his conditioning. He's in better shape than when we got him. It just seemed like the right alternative." Williams had family matters to deal with this offseason, and did not report to Spring Training in great shape. Cubs manager Dusty Baker said the right-hander needed to lose about 20 pounds. He isn't on Weight Watchers, but has trimmed down. "He's done everything we've asked him," Hendry said. "I don't know how much weight he's actually lost. He had some setbacks that did not enable him to get off to a good start in Spring Training. He was very honest and upfront about it, and said it was his fault. He didn't pass the buck."
