The White Sox have set Chris Sale free as the season winds down, despite the fact that he has made 28 starts and thrown 188 innings.

Sale tossed 118 pitches on Monday night, the most he has ever thrown in his young career.

"How the White Sox have controlled Sale is in stark contrast to the Nationals shutting down [Stephen] Strasburg earlier in the month, at 159 1/3 innings, in his first full year back from Tommy John surgery," writes Jeff Passan.

"While Sale has not undergone major arm surgery, his transition from relief pitcher to starter makes him ripe for an innings limit – like the Chicago Cubs placed on reliever-turned-starter Jeff Samardzija, who threw 174 2/3 this year."
