David Ortiz appears headed back to the disabled list because of a lingering right Achilles strain just a few days after being activated.

Ortiz had expected to make a decision about the remainder of the season by Sunday, but he did not have a definitive update prior to Boston's win over Kansas City.

"Right now all I'm trying to do is focus on getting better and make sure I'm ready to go next season," said Ortiz.

Ortiz missed 35 games after he was placed on the DL on July 17 with the injury. The Red Sox went 13-22 during his absence.

Before his injury, Ortiz was having his best season in years, hitting .318 with 23 home runs, 60 RBIs and a 1.026 OPS.
