An injury to the right hand of Freddy Garcia has complicated the immediate future of New York's starting rotation.
He was hit on the knuckle by a grounder and the hand immediately swelled up Thursday.
Garcia was taken for X-rays in Tampa and the Yankees announced Dr. Allen Miller, the club's orthopedic surgeon in Tampa, was tending to Garcia. The X-rays were negative.
While the hand is not broken, the Yankees haven't announced how much time he will miss. If he is out for a significant amount of time, Joe Girardi may have his rotation decided for him.
With A.J. Burnett dealt to Pittsburgh, and also injured, the Yankees would be forced to put Phil Hughes and Michael Pineda in the rotation after CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda and Ivan Nova.
"That's why you try to have depth every year," Girardi said. "You hope it won't come down to it."
