Yankees utility infielder Ramiro Pena underwent an emergency appendectomy early Monday, landing him in the hospital and on the disabled list. Monday was Pena's 26th birthday. "This morning I got a call from (trainer Gene Monahan) that he was headed over to the hospital and Geno wasn't exactly sure what it was, but he was having bad stomach pains," manager Joe Girardi said. "Unfortunately, on his birthday he had his appendix removed. It will be a birthday I'm sure he'll never forget." Pena has been serving as the backup at second base, shortstop and third base while Eduardo Nunez handles third base duties during Alex Rodriguez's disabled list stint.
