On Friday afternoon, the Padres became the first team to sign a first-round draft pick from this past week's First-Year Player Draft.
The 10th overall pick, second baseman Cory Spangenberg accepted a $1.86 million offer from the Padres.
The pick was compensation for the Padres failing to sign the ninth overall pick in the 2010 draft, right-handed pitcher Karsten Whitson, who backed out of a verbal agreement with the Padres for around $2 million and is now pitching for the University of Florida.
