Cesar Cabral was claimed on waivers by the Blue Jays from the Rays, who had claimed him in December's Rule 5 draft. “We got him on a waiver claim,” manager John Farrell had said at his Sunday morning briefing the day after the Jays’ late-afternoon press handout had heralded the deal. “Our scouts really liked him. This is a chance to bring him in and — actually we’re going to try and work out a trade (with Boston) to keep him. If we can’t work out that trade, he’ll probably pass on and go back in the waiver process.” A major-league source with knowledge of the convoluted Rays-Jays-Sox transaction insisted that the Cabral deal was rescinded because of the “non-compete” agreement with regard to Rule 5 and that is why it was done so quickly.
