The Red Sox and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez could not agree on a contract extension by the Sunday afternoon deadline, putting a blockbuster trade between Boston and San Diego on hold. The deal that was in place would have seen the Red Sox send highly rated prospects Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Reymend Fuentes to the Padres. "No contract," confirmed John Boggs, Gonzalez's lead representative. Boston and San Diego could rekindle the talks and try to get another variation of the deal done, perhaps with a different combination of prospects or Major League players going back to San Diego. The Red Sox were willing to give Gonzalez a six-year extension, but he was reportedly looking for an eight-year deal.
