Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has been cleared to begin hitting, some six weeks after surgery on his right thumb. Utley was expected to miss eight weeks when he went under the knife on July 1. He tore a ligament in his thumb sliding into second base in a game at Cincinnati on June 28.
