Patrick Leyland, son of manager Jim Leyland, was the 253rd player selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The right-handed hitting catcher batted .532 for Bishop Canevin, leading the Crusaders to the WPIAL Class AA semifinals and a spot in the state playoffs.
The 6-foot-2 Leyland has already committed to Maryland, so there's no guarantee he'll turn pro and join the Tigers.
"I'll have to do some soul-searching about what I want," said Leyland, adding that he has always dreamed about playing professional baseball. He was following the draft online when he saw his name appear. Being chosen by the Tigers will make the decision even harder, he said.
"It's an organization that my dad has been a part of for a while," said Leyland, whose father was in Chicago for last night's game against the White Sox. "He signed with them back when he signed out of high school, and now he's managing there. It definitely means a little bit more than (being drafted by) any other team."
