Jeff Bagwell is expected to go through the first full-squad workout with the rest of his teammates today, though this spring training will be anything but routine. The Astros consider Bagwell, whose deteriorating right shoulder forced him to undergo surgery and miss 115 games last year, a disabled player. They are hoping to recoup most of the $17 million he is due this year through an insurance policy. Bagwell has been working out vigorously to prove he can still play, and the Astros are going to give him a chance to do so. "The plan is to find out where is he at," general manager Tim Purpura said. "He's had the opportunity to try and hit, and did so in September and in the playoffs to some extent, but the throwing part of it is the unknown right now. "What can he do? And when he begins throwing, how does it affect his ability to hit? Those are big unknowns right now."
