Curtis Granderson has always worn number 28 with the Tigers, but manager Joe Girardi indicated after the season that he wanted to change from 27 to 28. ?He?s the man, he?s the one that makes everything go,? Granderson said of Girardi. ?He?s going to definitely have first dibs on it. If he chooses to take it, hey, I?ve played in other numbers before. The big thing now is there?s no name on the back, so it doesn?t really matter too much.? Granderson said he was already friendly with several Yankees. Granderson praised Tigers fans, who adored him, and said he already appreciated New York fans. ?I think New York?s fan base is probably one of the most knowledgeable about tradition and the team,? he said. ?Case in point, when I was walking around with Marcus Thames one time, an armed police officer pointed him out and said, ?Hey, that?s Marcus Thames, first at-bat home run against Randy Johnson.? And it just amazed me that we?re walking down the street in Manhattan, there?s a ton of people walking around, and this guy picked him out, out of uniform, and remembered that bit about him. ?So that part?s going to be probably the most interesting: that people know it and they study it and they learn it and they want to be all about New York. That?s what makes them so loyal and die-hard, and that?s going to be an interesting thing.?
