Perhaps seeking some outfield depth or someone to split time with Xavier Nady in right field, the Mets have expressed interest in former Angel Jeff DaVanon, who also may be getting attention from the Red Sox for Boston's center field opening. DaVanon's agent, Mike Nicotera, wouldn't be specific about what clubs are pursuing his client, but another baseball official said the Mets had interest. DaVanon would like to join another contender after playing in the 2004 and 2005 playoffs with the Angels. "He's coming from a competitive, contending club," Nicotera said. "Jeff is a pretty good example of the kind of guy the Angels have been successful with the past few years. "It's safe to say there are a number of teams interested and he's certainly interested in going to a contender where he can earn some at-bats. There are a number of moving pieces in the outfield mix (around baseball) and we're trying to be patient to find the best spot." DaVanon, a 32-year-old switch hitter, batted .231 with two homers and 15 RBI in 108 games last year for the Angels. In parts of six seasons in the majors, DaVanon has a .256 average and 28 homers in 402 games. He also has 48 stolen bases in 66 attempts. The Angels requested unconditional release waivers on DaVanon earlier this winter to make room on their roster for pitcher Hector Carrasco.
