The Indians have been mentioned often in trade rumors this month as a number of teams fight for the services of catcher Victor Martinez and pitcher Cliff Lee. It also appears possible that Cleveland could move struggling starter Fausto Carmona prior to Friday's non-waiver trade deadline. Carmona, who is 2-6 with a bloated 7.42 ERA in twelve starts for the Indians this season, was watched by a sizable contingent of scouts on Sunday in Pawtucket. Pitching for Cleveland's International League affiliate, the Columbus Clippers, Carmona was watched by no fewer than six or seven professional scouts at McCoy Stadium in Rhode Island. Carmona lost to the Triple-A club of the Red Sox, dropping to 1-3 with a 3.55 ERA in Columbus, but his fastball looked very impressive. He went seven innings against the Pawtucket Red Sox, allowing just six hits and striking out five batters. He walked two batters and was hurt by some shaky defense behind him. Pawtucket beat Columbus 3-2, and Carmona threw 71 of his 107 pitches for strikes. Scouts watched Carmona intently each time he took the mound, even failing to raise their radar gun when Pawtucket's Charlie Zink was pitching. When Carmona left the game, a number of scouts opted to leave the game early.
