The Cubs recalled right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-hander Jose Ascanio. Samardzija will be moved back to the bullpen, where he'll try to fill the void left by Angel Guzman. "Tends to be a trend so far," he said, laughing. "I've done the 'pen before, so I know what to expect. Same approach I had as a starter, go out and attack with the fastball and throw my off-speed stuff for strikes."
