Ervin Santana threw a five-hit shutout and handed Jon Garland his first loss of the season as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-0 Monday night in a matchup of AL division leaders.
``It's tough to win a game if you can't score,'' said Garland, who was trying to become the first nine-game winner in the majors.
``I had concentration every pitch, every inning, every hitter. The key for me was to keep the ball down and mix up my pitches,'' Santana said. ``My first start I was too fast and this start I slowed down. When I go too fast, all my pitches are up, and when I slow down, everything is down.''
Darin Erstad and Orlando Cabrera each had three hits for the Angels.
