The Rays have placed designated hitter Pat Burrell on the disabled list because of lingering neck pain.
The move was backdated to May 11, so Burrell will be eligible to return off the 15-day DL on May 26.
"We want to make sure he comes out of this well and there are no lingering effects," manager Joe Maddon said. "We don't expect it to be much longer than a normal DL stint. There's no finish line on it, but that's how we're going into this thing."
Burrell received a cortisone shot Friday, and doesn't know exactly what is wrong.
"They used big words; as far as I know it's a neck spasm or stiffness," he said. "Bottom line, I've been out of the lineup for a week now and things just aren't where I want them to be. ... It's looking like early next week."
