The agent for free-agent outfielder Brian Giles and Yankees GM Brian Cashman spoke yesterday. With Giles likely not returning to the Padres after the club turned down a three-year, $30 million proposal from Giles, Joe Bick is gauging other teams' interest in his left-handed hitting client, who will be 35 in January. No offer was made by Cashman. "I have said I am interested and we talked," Cashman said. "But I am talking to everybody. We are canvassing all the free agents and trade possibilities." Bick explained that since talks with the Padres broke off last Wednesday, "some other teams have become encouraged" about signing Giles, who batted .301 with 15 homers and 83 RBIs in 158 games this past season when he made $8 million. "I talked to [Cashman] and we had another good conversation," Bick said.
