Justin Duchscherer's chances of starting for the Athletics on Opening Day are looking worse and worse as the pitcher hopes to avoid elbow surgery. After experiencing pain in his right elbow, Duchscherer visited Dr. Lewis Yocum in Southern California on Thursday. Surgery is one of the last resorts at this point, but he won't pick up a baseball in the coming days in an effort to alleviate the pain. "They said there's no major damage, so I won't need Tommy John surgery or whatever," Duchscherer said. "Anytime your body doesn't feel right, you're always concerned. But I know it's not like, 'Holy crap, I'm going to miss a year' type of thing."
