Padres CEO Sandy Alderson said the team remains interested in signing Brian Giles but won't lose sight of what it believes the right fielder is worth regardless of offers from other clubs. Alderson described as "a bunch of baloney" the notion of a "San Diego discount" derived from other reported offers. "We're not governed by what somebody else offered," Alderson said. "To say somebody else offered X and that we'll sign with you for X minus a million dollars and describe that as a 'San Diego discount,' that misrepresents the entire process. "We've made appraisals and we've made an offer accordingly. (It) doesn't mean it's take it or leave it." The Padres balked at the three-year proposal received from Giles' agent on Thursday. The next day, General Manager Kevin Towers said he expected to resolve the situation by tomorrow, but the two sides said they haven't talked for a few days.
