Free-agent pitcher Ben Sheets has decided to undergo elbow surgery, but is hopeful that he'll be able to pitch in the second half of the season. The procedure will repair a torn flexor tendon in his right, throwing elbow. The Brewers, his 2008 team, may end up picking up the tab on the surgery. "We're working our way through all of the details and we don't know the answer yet," genera manager Gord Ash said. "Major League Baseball has regulations related to workers' comp and there are procedures and protocols that have to be respected. We're working our way through those so I can't give you much insight other than that." The Rangers were close to signing Sheets, and are reportedly still entertaining the idea of adding him for the second half. "We've maintained contact but I'm not optimistic at this point," general manager Jon Daniels said.
